SILICA RAMMING MASS

Silica ramming mass is made of SiO2. SiO2 is known as Silicon dioxide. Silica ramming mass is acidic in nature. It is used in powder form for lining or ramming in induction furnace. Quartzite stone is used to produce the Silica. Purity of quartzite stone is very high. Quartize is broken in small pieces or crushed. If there will be impurities in the stone, then it will create problem in later stage. Impurities will produce more amount of the liquid at heavy temperature. It will lower down the chemical and mechanical resistance of the lining. High purity silica gives longer life to the lining in furnace. Material produces from high quality silica lining furnace is uniform in quality and physical properties.

Silica lining are compact in comparison to other linings. Compactness of the lining depends on the proportion of the size of the granules in powder. Preportion of the size of granules is known and granulometrics.  Granulometric composition should be in such way that there should be minimum vacant or open space among the particles.

An ideal granulometric composition of commercial acidic silica ramming mass is given below.

SIZE                           PERCENTAGE

4mm to 1mm                        33%
1mm to 0.20mm                 30%
0.20mm to0.06mm            17%
0.06mm & below                 20%

Proportion of the finest material is very important. As it takes in part in the sintering reaction. If the fine particles are more then it may lead to adverse effect of on performance of  ramming layer.
